Vextrix Welcomes Young Rail Professionals to SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett

Back

Vextrix was proud to welcome members of Young Rail Professionals (YRP) to SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett, alongside our client SEGRO, delivery partner VolkerFitzpatrick, and Gardiner & Theobald LLP. The visit offered an exciting opportunity to go behind the scenes at one of the UK’s most advanced modern rail freight facilities, gaining insight into how it supports more efficient freight movement across the country. The Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) will deliver 335,000 sq. m of sustainable logistics space, all set within 600 acres of managed woodland and public parkland.

Vextrix Appointed by SEGRO to Oversee Complex Infrastructure and Rail Interface Works

Vextrix was appointed by SEGRO PLC to deliver key roles across this complex programme — including Project Management, Client Sponsor, and NEC Supervisor services. Our work has supported major phases of the scheme, from redevelopment of the mainline railway to the commercial development of adjacent land.

Initially appointed in 2016, our team helped deliver significant upgrades to the Midland Main Line, including a new junction and a four-track rail-over-rail intersection structure. We also contributed to early-stage development of the intermodal terminal and rail-served warehouse complex — critical parts of the wider scheme.

As the client’s representative for Network Rail, we’ve managed the interface with rail stakeholders throughout, acting as Single Point of Contact and guiding delivery through key third-party and Asset Protection processes. That has included developing and managing various agreements with Network Rail, overseeing on-network works, and facilitating weekly stakeholder meetings to keep everything aligned and moving forward.

More recently, we’ve been appointed NEC Supervisor on the scheme — a role focused on ensuring the highest quality of construction and managing compliance with the programme’s complex technical, safety, and assurance requirements.

The Site Visit: Behind the Scenes of SEGRO’s Major Rail and Logistics Development

The visit gave YRP members the chance to:

  • Connect with the project team and industry professionals to get a real sense of the scale and complexity involved
  • Take a guided tour of the site and see progress firsthand
  • Explore how rail and logistics are being brought together in practice

It was a fantastic opportunity to walk the site, share insights into our work to date, and show how we’re helping to keep this major scheme on track.

Supporting Long-Term Impact

This scheme is about long-term environmental and community impact — something we’re proud to support alongside our client. From the creation of 4,000 new jobs and support for local recruitment, to environmental enhancements including over 4,000 trees planted and new bridleways approved through the planning process, the scheme is already making a difference. We’re proud to play a part in a scheme that’s helping shape the future of sustainable transport while giving back to the local community. A special thanks to the VolkerFitzpatrick team for going above and beyond to make the YRP visit run so smoothly.
