We are looking for an experienced Rail Project Manager to join us on a permanent basis or as a contractor if you prefer.

We are looking for a Project Manager with experience in the Rail sector to become a part of our flourishing team, working on and supporting rail enhancement projects across York and the North-East region.

We have a wide range of work to accomplish, with our current rail projects including major station upgrades, re-signalling, new station buildings and enhancements and technical and advisory services for a number of high-profile schemes.

About the role

We’re looking for someone with the following skills and experience to join our team:

  • Lead the development and delivery of solutions for high-value, multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring effective management of risks impacting the operational railway.
  • Manage and coordinate interfaces with internal stakeholders, maintaining compliance with third-party governance and assurance requirements.
  • Oversee stakeholder compliance with the Railways Act and Network Licence, ensuring all project outputs and deliverables are achieved.
  • Interpret the client’s scope and programme to define operational railway interface requirements, providing clear advice and solutions to support timely and informed client decision-making.
  • Collaborate with CDM (Construction Design Management) and other duty holders to ensure full compliance with CDM Regulations.
  • Secure and deploy appropriate resources, maintaining clear communication on progress against agreed milestones and managing contingency actions where required.
  • Support alignment across organisations to determine the appropriate proposer for infrastructure changes in line with the Common Safety Method (Risk Assessment) Regulations.
  • Track, assess, and report on project risk and performance throughout the full project lifecycle.
  • Capture lessons learned and work with stakeholders to develop mitigation measures that strengthen and refine project proposals.
  • Establish and maintain strong stakeholder relationships, effectively managing expectations while advocating for project objectives.
  • Identify clashes and conflicting activities, driving efficiencies and coordinated delivery.
  • Provide support during accident, incident, and close-call investigations, sharing outcomes and insights with client teams.
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork, client engagement, and clear, effective communication skills.
  • Build trusted relationships, share expertise, and constructively challenge ideas through sound analysis and evaluation.

Technical Experience:

  • Degree qualified in Project Management, or another related discipline
  • Membership (or working towards membership) Association for Project Management
  • Achieved PRINCE2 Foundation or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of the operational railway and railway infrastructure
  • Demonstrable experience of delivery of projects in the rail environment
  • Understanding of project commercial requirements & programme controls
  • Knowledge of health, safety & environmental requirements and legislation including CDM Regulations and CSM-RA
  • Knowledge and experience of project budget management.
  • Knowledge of rail possessions/ isolations

Preferable but not essential:

  • Experience in delivering third party projects on Network Rail Infrastructure
  • Familiar or understand the Network Rail Asset Protection Process
  • Full project lifecycle experience
  • 1-2 years of experience gained within Project Management, within a consultancy environment
