Castleford Rail Station transformation complete

Back

As we close for 2020, we end the year with a fantastic project handover at Castleford Rail Station. Appointed in 2017, we have successfully delivered Contract Administrator, Quantity Surveyor and Principal Designer services for our client Northern.

Delivered through a joint partnership with West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Northern, Network Rail and Wakefield Council, the project has provided a significantly improved station which is not only attractive to look at, but provides customers with a more accessible link to the Town.

Improvements to the station include:

  • New station building, extended car park, subway enhancements and connectivity to the bus station for passengers. New CCTV, lighting, CIS and retail tenancies
  • Significant refurbishment of the subway underpass to create a more attractive link between the rail station and residential areas in the south of Castleford town centre
  • Significant public realm improvements both to the area around the station and on key walking routes between the rail station, the town centre and the bus station
  • A modern, high quality passenger waiting facility including a ticket vending machine, seating and a disabled toilet
  • Sheltered cycle parking
  • Changes to the car park layout to allow for easier pedestrian and non-motorised access

Our Principal Designer team worked tirelessly to ensure that the multiple stakeholders on the project were able to give their input into the CDM documentation. The stakeholders’ knowledge around the areas of concern and their input into the CDM process was vital to ensure the project was delivered safely. Different needs and requirements were considered at team meetings in regard to safety of construction delivery as well as the operation of the building. There was a high level of good communication channels between the stakeholders meaning the delivery of the project ran smoothly and successfully.

As part of our handover, our Engineering Design team provided our client with a 3D walk through of the station which lets all stakeholders see the improvements for themselves  – take a look through the link below to visit the station for yourself. We hope more people can enjoy the improvements moving in to 2021:

“Improving the station and the spaces for people to park and ride by train will help to reduce the damaging economic and environmental costs of congestion in our towns and cities.”
