Cory and Blue Phoenix Group

Back

Vextrix is providing Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management services for two key infrastructure projects in the waste and energy sector. Both developments focus on sustainability, operational efficiency, and reducing environmental impact. Our expertise in cost management, procurement strategy, and risk mitigation means our team confidently supports our clients in the delivery of these complex schemes.

The team’s experience in the energy sector means Vextrix understands the complexities of waste management and sustainable infrastructure projects. The team draws on its industry experience to oversee the use of advanced waste processing technologies, maintain efficient project delivery, and support the environmental goals of the project.

Project: Barking Waste Transfer Station
Client: Cory
Value: £50m
Services: Client Quantity Surveyor

Vextrix is providing Client Quantity Surveying services for the redevelopment of Barking Waste Transfer Station (WTS) on behalf of Cory, supporting large-scale infrastructure upgrades that improve operational efficiency and align with environmental objectives. The project involves constructing a new facility with advanced waste compaction technology, managing essential building services, and overseeing the demolition and reconstruction of Rippleway Wharf, including improvements to flood defence walls. The improvements also include river dredging to increase capacity and the installation of an electric gantry crane to support sustainable waste transportation.

Sustainable Waste Solutions

Designed to process approximately 550,000 tonnes of waste annually, the upgraded WTS will allow the efficient transfer of waste using the River Thames to Cory’s Energy from Waste (EFW) facility. This process will reduce road traffic, emissions, and congestion. Vextrix is providing project support throughout the construction phase, overseeing contract management, cost control, and value engineering while ensuring compliance with contractual requirements. By working closely with the client and project teams, Vextrix is supporting the delivery of sustainable, high-performing waste infrastructure solutions.

Project: Tilbury IBA processing plant
Client: Blue Phoenix Group
Value: £40m
Services: Commercial Manager and Client Quantity Surveyor

Vextrix has been appointed to deliver Quantity Surveying services on the installation of a new processing plant within the existing Shed 3 at Tilbury Docks. Working with the Blue Phoenix Group, the world’s largest ash processor, this project supports sustainability by reducing landfill reliance and creating construction materials from Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA).

Upgrading Infrastructure

The project includes installing a new processing plant in Shed 3, supported by piled foundations and a reinforced concrete floor slab. External works include an RCC-paved yard and a new attenuation tank for improved drainage. A ramp and conveyor system will link the facility to the existing Blue Phoenix site for seamless transport of Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate (IBAA). Additional upgrades include a new welfare area, a weighbridge, and the maintenance of site operations until the new facility is in operation. The Blue Phoenix Group processes IBA to recover metals for recycling and produce IBAA, a sustainable alternative to natural materials. This method reduces reliance on landfills while providing eco-friendly materials, displaying circular economics in practice

Providing Expert Commercial Management

During the pre-tender phase, Vextrix provided budget estimates, collaborated with architects on the project scope, and prepared tender documents. The team managed the tender process, analysed submissions, and identified value engineering opportunities. The tender reports guided the contractor selection, followed by contract finalisation.

As construction progresses, Vextrix is working with the client as a trusted advisor throughout on-site activities, certifying payments, and advising on contractual matters. When the project is completed, the team will prepare the final account and completion certificate, ensuring a smooth transition to operational use.

This project highlights the team’s expertise in managing complex energy and waste sector projects. The new processing plant will allow the client to improve recycling operations and provide sustainable materials for construction.
